“Beleaguered” Attorney General Jeff Sessions is set to make an announcement that the Trump administration will conduct an investigation into internal leaks, according to a Fox News report.
Attorney General Sessions is on the hot seat over his recusal from the Russia probe case, and has come under the president’s public scrutiny in the last week. The leak investigation would seek to quell the dissemination of sensitive and potentially damaging information to the press.
According to Fox News, a U.S. official said the investigation has “been in the works for some time and will most likely happen sometime in the next week.”
The president has specifically called upon Attorney General Sessions to be more aggressive fighting intelligence leaks.
“I want the attorney general to be much tougher,” Trump said. “I want the leaks from intelligence agencies, which are leaking like rarely have they ever leaked before, at a very important level. These are intelligence agencies we cannot have that happen.”
Trump’s new communications director Anthony Scaramucci has signaled early that leaking intelligence to the press, which may constitute committing a federal crime, will not be tolerated.
“You’re either going to stop leaking or you’re going to get fired,” he warned.
